Dental X-Rays

It’s hard to know what’s really going on with your teeth just by looking at the surface. To get a clearer picture of your oral health, your dentist may take x-rays. These images are used to diagnose underlying issues. We can use them to screen for oral cancer, periodontitis, bone loss, and/or issues with your wisdom teeth.

We only take x-rays as needed (usually once a year) or when we see a new patient. Radiographs emit very low levels of radiation, which means that they’re safe for children and adults.

Extractions

When a tooth becomes infected, broken, or decayed, your best option may be to have it extracted. Our dentists aim to make tooth removals as comfortable as possible for you. We also offer restorative solutions for missing teeth, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures.

Tooth extractions are often required for wisdom teeth. Since the third molars emerge later in life, you might not have enough space in your mouth for them. If they are impacted, they can cause issues with your surrounding teeth. 

There are two main types of tooth extractions. The first is a simple extraction. This is where the tooth has already emerged above the gum line, so your dentist can remove it relatively easily using dental forceps. 

But what if the tooth is in a difficult position? The tooth may have curved roots or be in close proximity to nerves. The jaw bone may be too dense to remove the tooth with dental forceps alone. In these cases, a surgical extraction is more suitable. 

If the wisdom tooth hasn’t fully erupted yet, a surgical extraction may be required; your dentist will need to make an incision in the gum line to remove the tooth.

New Patient Exams

We’re always happy to welcome new patients to Affinity Dental. If you’re new to our clinic, we will examine the current state of your oral health. You can inform us about any concerns you might have, such as:

• Sensitive or painful teeth

• Bad breath

• Missing teeth

• Tender gums

   

Once we finish the exam, we can identify solutions for these common issues. You may require a root canal, dental implants, or dental crowns.

You might have heard that it’s important to visit the dentist twice a year. But why is that?

Firstly, it allows your dentist to detect any potential issues early on. It’s much easier (and less expensive) to fill a small cavity than to get a root canal procedure. 

Secondly, your dentist can remove any tartar. Tartar, or calculus, is a hardened mineral deposit that can only be removed using specialized toots. Its sticky surface attracts bacteria and makes your teeth more prone to cavities.

Finally, you get to enjoy the feeling of a clean smile! After receiving a polish and fluoride treatment, you’ll love how strong and smooth your teeth feel.
